Manufacturing of Rubber Silanes
The elements silicon and carbon can be regarded as the basis of matter and life on Earth: silicon plays the key role in the petrification of living matter. The earth's crust consists mainly of the elements silicon and oxygen, while carbon forms the basic building block for all animals and plants. Organofunctional silanes are intermediaries between these two chemical worlds, since, due to their difunctionality, they are able to bond chemically with inorganic (particularly siliceous) surfaces as well as with organic polymers. As special representatives of this family of compounds, rubber silanes create a permanent bond between silica (= siliceous surface) and rubber (= organic polymer).
Si 69® is produced in a multi-phase process from the basic raw materials allyl chloride, trichlorosilane, ethanol and a sodium sulfide compound.
The Evonik Degussa GmbH Advanced Fillers & Pigments Division operates a total of four production facilities for silanes and silane derivatives in western Europe, the US and China. Application engineering facilities exist in Germany, the US and Taiwan. Our research facilities are concentrated in Germany.
